About Civil Service Exams

How do I know what you are currently testing for?

We list all current job vacancies on our website on the Recruitment and Employment Information page. The postings are broken into sections:

Open and continuous testing: are those titles which we test for throughout the year and do not mean that there are current vacancies.

Current Vacancies: are those titles for which we have a vacancy. All titles in this section have a deadline by which you must apply in order to be considered for testing. Applying by the deadline means submitting an online application and an online exam request by the Closing Date on the vacancy.

Temporary Upgrades: are those titles for which we have a vacancy and in order to request an exam, you must be a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign employee who is currently working within the promotional line for that classification and interested in a temporary upgrade.

Seasonal Postings: are those titles in the crafts and trades section that we test for on a quarterly basis. However, there may be no vacancies at the time of the posting.

To view exam titles we are currently accepting exam requests for, go to:
https://jobs.illinois.edu, and click on Civil Service Jobs/Application. Then click the links on the right side of the page.

How many requests may I submit at any one time?
For those classifications listed under the Open and Continuous testing section, you may submit no more than one exam request per day.

For those classifications listed under the Current Vacancies, temporary upgrades or seasonal postings, you are allowed to request as many exams as you qualify for.

Why hasn’t my exam been scheduled yet?
Exams are scheduled based on several factors: volume of exam requests received; availability of testing slots and equipment (computers). You will be sent an exam date through U.S. Mail and e-mail approximately 1½ - 2 weeks before your exam appointment. You can monitor the status of your exam request online at https://jobs.illinois.edu. Log in and click on Civil Service Activity.

What can I bring with me to my exam?
You may use a resume, transcript, staff development course listing and/or any applicable license(s)/certificate(s) for reference purposes. You may use your own hand-held, battery-operated calculator. It will be your responsibility to bring any of these items.

How long will it take me to take my exam?
Time limits for exams range from two to four hours, depending on the exam.

Are there any Study Guides to help prepare for the exam?
The State Universities Civil Service System does not provide study guides, except for those exams in the clerical area. Those study guides can be found at: http://www.sucss.state.il.us.

Once I take the exam, when will I get my score?
You should receive your score via U.S. mail within three weeks after taking your exam. In addition, your score can be viewed online at https://jobs.illinois.edu. Once you log in, click on Civil Service Activity.

What’s a good score for an exam?
Usually a minimum score of 70 is required to pass an exam. A 100 is the highest score you can attain unless Veterans Preference Points are added (see question below). When you receive your score in the mail, it will indicate your rank on the register on the date your score was entered in our computer system.

Can I find out what I missed on my exam?
Follow the instructions "for questions regarding score accuracy" listed in the mailer you will receive containing your exam score.

Can I retake my exam?
You can retake (rewrite) an exam three times during a 12-month period. There must be at least one month between rewrites.

How often are exams given?
Our normal testing schedule is Monday-Friday with exams administered twice a day at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Do you offer Saturday or evening exams?
No. Exams are administered only during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where do I go to take my exam?
Exams are administered at Staff Human Resources (SHR) in the Personnel Services Building, 52 E. Gregory Drive, Champaign, IL 61820.

Where do I park while I’m taking my exam?
Metered parking is available in front of Staff Human Recouces on Gregory Drive and other nearby streets. The meters take quarters, dimes and nickels.

What if I’m late or miss my exam?
Latecomers are not admitted. For those classifications listed under the open and continuous testing section, you may reschedule. Those classifications listed under the current vacancies, temporary upgrades, or seasonal postings sections CANNOT be rescheduled. A pattern of canceling, rescheduling or failing to keep exam appointments may result in your disqualification for employment consideration at the University.

Can I take more than one exam?
You may take an exam for each classification you are interested in. For those classifications listed under the open and continuous testing section, applicants are allowed to submit one exam request per day.

For those classifications listed under the current vacancies, temporary upgrades, or seasonal postings, you are allowed to request as many exam as you qualify for at one time.

When I pass my exam, when will I be scheduled for an interview?

How can I monitor my current register positions?
Go to our website at https://jobs.illinois.edu, log in, and click on Civil Service Activity.

What if I’m a Veteran of the Armed Forces?
Eligible Veterans may receive 3, 5 or 10 bonus points to be added to passing Original Entry exam scores. To apply, you must complete an application for Veterans Preference Points and attach required documentation and submit to Staff Human Resources. The required documentation only needs to be turned in one time.
Veterans Preference Points Application Form (PDF Format) which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader

How do I receive additional points on my exam?
Only eligible Veterans of the Armed Forces may receive bonus points.

Can my exam score be transferred to another State University in Illinois?
You may request to have an active exam score transferred to other places of employment governed by the State Universities Civil Service System of Illinois. Check with the institution in advance to determine if they use the classification. We do not accept Police Officer scores from other campuses.

What if I have a conviction?
Having a conviction record is not an automatic bar to employment. Background investigations are conducted on persons listing conviction records on applications and on persons hired into designated job classifications.

How long is my typing score good?
Typing scores are good for two years. However, we cannot lift Extra Help typing scores for use on Civil Service exams.

What if I retake an exam and get a lower score?
We always retain the higher score on the register.

Can I keep my cell phone with me in the testing room?
Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room.

Where are University of Illinois Extension office exams administered?
Exams for U of I Extension positions are administered at the Extension Offices. To request an exam, contact the Extension Office for which you are applying.

If I am not local, how can I test for your campus?
Courtesy exams can be administered at other universities in Illinois. When you submit your exam request for our campus, make a note on the exam that you would like to take a Courtesy exam. Our Testing Coordinator will contact you to arrange for testing at a location near you.
